I thought I'd share a teaching moment we had yesterday afternoon as we began our passover.
The kids set up a small stone "altar" in the driveway (the driveway where we live now is all large-rock gravel). So we discussed why we don't do things on altars now, but why they did it in the Temple and that there will be an altar in the new Temple. Then we set our lamb (oatmeal container with cotton balls on the outside, with TP rolls as legs) on the altar and set it ablaze. We discussed that the lamb represented a sin sacrifice and that Yeshua was our sin sacrifice. Once that burned a bit, we put the remainder of our leaven (sourdough bread in a brown bag) inside the container to help burn the bread. Both burned, but only the outside of the bread burned. We added some small sticks (everything was wet from the night's rain, btw) and it burned a little more. I poked at the bread to break it up. Lo and behold, the very center of the bread was STILL soft, even though the outside was totally burned. We showed the kids that even though the did not turn to ash, it was not edible. It showed how hard it is to get rid of sin. And the soft middle showed that sin will remain in us until we live in Heaven. Since it was starting to rain again (and get a tad chilly), we figured we showed the kids enough lessons for the moment and tossed the remainder into the trash. Then, being responsible "campers", we put dumped water over the little altar and surrounding stones until there was nothing but a little bit of steam remaining.
Just a little glimpse into this year's passover celebration.
